4 Self Care Tips Every Music Major Needs to Know
Here at Music House, we don’t want to see any of our students reach that point! That is why we’ve compiled a list of self-care tips that you won’t want to miss. Continue reading to learn more!
#1.) Spend time with your friends and family.
Practicing is important, but so is spending time with the people who love you and want to see you succeed. Socialization plays a significant role in helping to keep you in positive spirits. Taking a few hours to relax, watch a movie, and laugh will go a long way in bolstering your mental health and renewing your energy. You can also incorporate socialization by inviting other music majors to a study session at a local cafe or out in the quad on a sunny spring day! Just make sure you are spending quality time with others.
#2.) Step away from your instrument.
Playing the same piece of music over and over again day in and day out is how you perfect it. However, believe it or not, there is such a thing as too much practice. Wearing yourself down can lead to making silly mistakes or could even cause injuries. Vocalists need to be especially mindful of how well they are taking care of themselves and their voices. If practice seems to just be one more obstacle, take a break for a day or two. Give yourself time to recoup and refocus your thoughts.
#3.) Be kind to yourself.
It is true what they say - we are our own biggest critics. It is normal to have lofty expectations of yourself and want to do well with your instrument. In fact, it would be weird if you didn’t! However, remember that you are only human and you’re bound to mess up or make mistakes on occasion. When these hiccups do happen, try to show yourself a little grace. You’re working hard, giving it all you have, and at the end of the day, you should be proud of all that you have accomplished.
#4.) Eat healthy and stay hydrated.
While it is no secret that plenty of college students get by on a steady diet of ramen and energy drinks, try to find ways to eat healthier. Pack healthy snacks to enjoy throughout the day, such as fresh fruit or peanut butter crackers. Carry your water bottle with you and pace your water intake throughout the day. Making these little adjustments will help you feel happier and healthier in the grand scheme of things.
